Prefixed verbs of motion (part 3)

The first is заходить/заезжать (Imperfective) and зайти/заехать (Perfective). The prefix за + verb of motion means to pop in/to drop by. When you are on your way to the final destination but need to make a short visit to another place.

Заходить (imperf.), зайти (perf.) are used for movement on foot, and заезжать (imperf.), заехать (perf.) are if you use any type of transportation.

По утрам я всегда захожу в кофейню выпить чашечку ристретто перед работой.Every morning I always pop into the coffee shop to drink a cup of ristretto before my job.
Она очень торопилась, поэтому зашла в офис только, чтобы поздороваться.She was in a hurry, that’s why she dropped by the office only to say hello.
Мы зайдём на 5 минут к подруге домой забрать документы.We are going to drop by our friend’s place for 5 minutes to take some documents.
Раньше он заходил за утренней газетой в этот магазинчик, а сейчас читает новости в интернете.He used to pop into that store to buy a morning newspaper.

The next is обходить/объезжать (Imperfective) and обойти/объехать (Perfective). The prefix об(о/ъ) + verb of motion denotes to go around. Besides, it could mean to go around making a circle (then we may use the preposition вокруг around + Genitive case) or a part of a circle and go around any place exploring it or looking for something.

Я обошла все магазины, но так и не нашла платье нужного цвета и размера.I went around all the shops but never found a dress of the proper colour and size.
Они собираются обойти вокруг горы, это займёт у них почти 100 часов.They are going to go around the mountain, which will take them almost 100 hours.

Here, we can omit the preposition вокруг, the meaning will be the same, but grammar is different. Without вокруг we use the Accusative case straightaway.

Они собираются обойти гору.They are going to go around the mountain.

More examples:

После сильного дождя на этом месте всегда образуется большая лужа, и детям приходится её обходить.After a heavy rain, there is always a big puddle, and children have to go around it.
Если туристы обойдут весь музей, у них не останется сил на вечернюю экскурсию.If the tourists go around the whole museum, they won’t have energy for the evening excursion.
