It is time to meet or refresh some verbs of motion with prefixes in Russian. At first sight, they seem very complicated and are not worth learning. However, if to start getting introduced with them portionally, you’ll see how they are important and widely used for communication.

Prefixed verbs of motion in Russian

The first pair is приходить (Imperf.) / прийти (Perf.) – to arrive, come. Using them, we emphasize on the arrival, the end of movement, the reaching of destination.

Обычно я прихожу на работу в 10.Normally, I arrive at work at 10 a.m.
Но завтра я приду на работу в 9.30.But tomorrow I will come to work at 9.30 a.m.
А вчера я пришла на работу в 11.30.And yesterday I came to work at 11.30 a.m.
Раньше мы часто приходили на этот пляж.We used to come to this beach.

The opposite of приходить / прийти is уходить (Imperf.) / уйти (Perf.) – to leave, get away.

Он всегда уходит из офиса домой в 19.00.He always leaves the office for home at 7 p.m.
Послезавтра у него будет собрание, поэтому он уйдёт с работы в 20.00.The day after tomorrow he is having a big meeting, therefore he will leave the work at 8 p.m.
Во вторник он ушёл раньше, потому что это был предпраздничный день.On Tuesday, he left early because that was a pre-holiday day.
Летом он будет уходить из офиса позже из-за того, что многие его зарубежные партнёры летом должны работать дольше.In the summer he will leave the office later due to his abroad partners have to work longer in the summer.

The next pair is входить (Imperf.) / войти (Perf.) – to enter, step in. The main difference between these ones and приходить / прийти is prefix – при means that you arrive / come to a certain place, covering a long distance and/or it takes relatively long time, whereas, prefix – в/во means that you enter a place locating not far from it, for example, you are in the office and enter a room from the corridor hall.

Мы вошли в лифт, когда двери уже закрывались.We stepped in the lift, when doors were already closing.
Всегда когда мы входим в этот зал с экспонатами, у нас захватывает дух.Always when we enter that hall with exhibits, if takes our breath away.
Как только я войду в кабинет, я скажу всем: «Доброе утро!».As soon as I enter the business room, I’ll say to everyone: “Good morning!”.

The opposite of входить / войти is выходить (Imperf.) / выйти (Perf.) – to go out, step out.

Он вышел из офиса на 15 минут за кофе.He went out of the office to buy coffee.
Зимой утром я выхожу из дома, когда ещё темно.In winter in the morning I step out of home when it is still dark.
Мы выйдем из подъезда и сразу позвоним тебе.As we go out the entrance, we will call you.
