There are different types of pronouns, but today let’s clarify everything about the demonstrative ones.

In the Russian language, we have two types of such pronouns: этот “this” (something that is next to us) and тот “that” (which is a bit further or even very far from us).

Demonstrative pronouns in Russian

Both of them are grammatically agreed by the nouns they are used with. It means that we decline demonstrative pronouns according to gender and number in all six cases.

Этот карандаш зелёный, а тот жёлтый.This pencil is green and that one is yellow.
Эта ручка красная, а та синяя.This pen is red and that one is blue.
Это яблоко сладкое, а то кислое.This apple is sweet and that one is sour.
Эти студенты из Португалии, а те из Румынии.These students are from Portugal and those ones are from Romania.

В том пруду нельзя купаться.It’s not allowed to swim in that pond.
После этой лекции они пойдут в кино.After this lecture, they are going to the cinema.
Она так и купила ту красную юбку.She never bought that red skirt.
Подойти к этой женщине и спроси, где можно купить домашнее варенье.Come to this woman and ask, where we can buy homemade jam.
Вы интересуетесь той картиной?Are you interested in that picture?
Мы отдыхали на той реке в прошлом году.We had our vacation at that river last year.
Без этого яблока салат не будем вкусным.The salad isn’t going to be yummy without this apple.
Благодаря тому дереву в саду есть где отдохнуть в тени.Thanks to that tree, there is a place to rest in the shadows.
Он не покупал это кресло.He didn’t buy this armchair.
Я не хочу пить кофе с тем молоком.I don’t want to drink coffee with that milk.
В этом озере живёт много рыб.A lot of fish live in this lake.
Кроме этих огурцов дома у нас никаких других овощей нет.Except for these cucumbers, we don’t have any other vegetables.
Ты рассказал новость тем коллегам?Have you told the news to those colleagues?
Я потеряла эти ключи неделю назад и вот сегодня наконец их нашла.I lost these keys a week ago, and today I finally have found them.
Он больше не пользуется теми инструментами.He doesn’t use those tools any more.
Она жила в тех краях в детстве.She lived in those places in her childhood.
