Today let’s talk about another important grammar topic both for written and oral speech. That topic is Double Conjunctions in the Russian language. They could also be called Double or Two-Part conjunctions.

Double conjunctions in Russian

Normally, we need to use such conjunctions to make one big compound sentence from two simple ones. These simple parts can complement (не только…, но и; как…, так и), oppose (не…, а; или…, или) or unite (чем…, тем; хотя и…, но) each other.

Here are some models. The conjunction или…, или:

Ты можешь или пойти с нами бегать в парк, или остаться дома.You can either go jogging with us to the park, or stay home.
На обед она ест или куриную грудку с брокколи, или просто пьёт протеиновый коктейль на растительном молоке.She eats either chicken breast with broccoli for lunch, or just drinks a protein cocktail with plant-based milk.
Мы собираемся изучать или турецкий язык, или пушту.We are going to learn either Turkish, or Pashto. 

The conjunction ни…, ни:

Ни я, ни моя собака не хотим гулять в сильный ливень.Neither I, nor my dog wants to walk while it’s showering.
Он не купил ни чечевицы, ни нута.He has bought neither lentils, nor chickpeas.
Они не хотят заводить ни кошку, ни попугая.They want to have neither a cat, nor a dog.

Draw attention that verbs in the sentences with that double conjunction must be in negative form.

The conjunction не…, а:

Я смотрела фильм не 2012 года, а 1990.I saw the film not of 2012 but the 1990 one.
Он поступил не на медицинский факультет, а на фармацевтический.He entered not the medical but the pharmaceutical faculty.
Она работает не в поликлинике, а в научном институте.She works not at the health center but at the Research Institute.

The conjunction не только…, но и:

Мы пригласили на ужин не только родственников, но и коллег.We have invited not only our relatives for the dinner but also our colleagues.
Он переводит не только с нидерландского, но и с португальского.He translates not only from Dutch but also from Portuguese.
Ты взял с собой не только зубную пасту, но и сухой шампунь.You have taken not only the toothpaste but also the dry shampoo.

The conjunction как…, так и:

Эту квартиру можно как арендовать, так и приобрести.You may both rent this apartment and purchase it.
Он пьёт как квас, так и комбучу.He drinks both kvass and kombucha.
Я могу рассказать как грустную, так и смешную историю.I can tell both a sad story and a funny one.

The conjunction хотя и…, но:

Я хотя и не строгая вегетарианка, но молочные продукты ем редко.Although I’m not a strict vegetarian, I rarely eat dairy products.
Хотя мы и не знакомы с ним лично, знаем, что у него гнилой характер.Although we haven’t met him personally, we know he is bad tempered.
Этот ёжик хотя и домашний, но кусается больно.Although he is a pet hedgehog, he bites severely.

Sometimes you can omit но, especially when the sentence starts with хотя.

The conjunction чем…, тем:

Чем ниже у меня давление, тем больше хочется мне спать.The lower blood pressure I have, the more I want to sleep.
Чем крепче кофе я пью, тем бодрее становлюсь.The stronger coffee I have, the more peppily I become.
Чем быстрее он бежит, тем меньше шансов у других спортсменов выиграть эту гонку.The faster he runs, the fewer chances other sportsmen have to win that race.
