Clothes and Shoes

Clothes and Shoes are two of the most demanded topics among people who learn the Russian language. It resulted from the fact that everyone needs to be familiar with their vocabulary and survival phrases regardless if you are a student, a tourist, or an expat. First of all, we learn the most frequent words on these topics.

Clothes (Одежда, always fem., sing.):

The verbs носить/поносить “to wear” and надевать/надеть “to put on” are normally the most widespread ones in everyday communication. They are very similar but still have some grammar and meaning differences.

(По)носить:

Я (по)ношу	Мы (по)носим
Ты (по)носишь	Вы (по)носите
Он/она (по)носит	Они (по)носят
(По)носи	(По)носите

This verb is followed by the Accusative (if it’s clothes/shoes) and the Prepositional (if we mention a place where we wear them).

Я ношу деловой костюм на работе.	I wear business suits at work.
Он раньше всегда носил рубашку в университете, а сейчас носит только футболку.	Before, he always wore a shirt at the university, now he wears only a T-shirt.
Она совсем чуть-чуть поносила это платье в детском садике, потому что быстро выросла из него.	She wore that dress not long time, and then she overgrew it.
Не носи больше эти джинсы в баре, они уже не модные.	Don’t wear those jeans at the bar, they are out of date.

Надевать (imperf.):

Я надеваю	Мы надеваем
Ты надеваешь	Вы надеваете
Он/она надевает	Они надевают
Надевай	Надевайте

Надеть (perf.):

Я надену	Мы наденем
Ты наденешь	Вы наденете
Он/она наденет	Они наденут
Надень	Наденьте

Unlike the verb above, this one is followed by the Accusative in both cases: clothes/shoes and place. The translation into English sounds strange, but it is what it literally means.

Они надели спортивные костюмы на тренировку.	They put on tracksuits for the workout.
Надень галстук на работу, сегодня же праздник.	Put on the tie for work, it is celebration today.
Я всегда надеваю тёплые ботинки на пикник в холодную погоду.	I always put on warm boots for a picnic when it is cold outside.
Мы наденем новые купальники на пляж.	We are going to put on our new swimsuits for the beach.
