You all know how to express reason of something with the conjunction because – «потому что». And it’s the most neutral option. Let’s see what other variants exist.

If the reason is negative or causes negative results, we use the preposition due to / owing to – «из-за + Gen» in simple sentences and «из-за того что» in compound sentences.

Reason conjunctions in Russian

Simple sentences have only one subject, after «из-за» we use an object in Genitive case. For example:

Сегодня мы не плаваем из-за сильного шторма.We aren’t swimming today due to the strong storm.
Из-за коронавируса люди не могут много путешествовать.Due to corona virus people can’t travel a lot.
Мы плохо спали из-за соседей сверху.We had a bad sleep owing to the neighbours above.

Compound sentences have two and more subjects, so it consists of two or more simple sentences between which we use the preposition with a linker «из-за того что». For example:

Из-за того что никто не пришёл, тренировку отменили.Due to that nobody came, the training has been cancelled.
Студент провалил экзамен из-за того, что не готовился к нему.The student failed his exam due to that he did not prepared for it.
Мы не купили продукты из-за того, что терминал в магазине не работал, а у нас не было налички.We didn’t buy food due to that terminal at the store was out of order, and we had no cash.

If the reason is positive or causes positive results, we use the preposition thanks to – «благодаря + Dat» in simple sentences. For example:

Благодаря чётким инструкциям я сама собрала велосипед.Thanks to the clear instructions I assembled the bicycle myself.
Он накачался благодаря хорошему тренеру.He has become fitter thanks to the good trainer.
Я нашла отличный учебник благодаря совету моего преподавателя.I have found a great manual thank to my teacher’s advice.

In compound sentences we use the preposition with a linker «благодаря тому что». For example:

Она сегодня быстро закончила всю работу благодаря тому, что нормально выспалась.Today she finished all work quickly thank to that she had slept properly.
Благодаря тому что весна была тёплой и не очень сухой, урожай получился богатый.Thanks to the warm and not very dry spring, we have the rich harvest.
Я успела приехать вовремя благодаря тому, что вышла заранее.I was able to arrive on time thanks to that I had left in advance.
