Today we are learning the portion of the most important verbs that we use talking about our everyday life. Despite their big role and widespread usage, the conjugation of some is tricky and irregular.

First, let’s mark the regular ones: принимать, завтракать, обедать, ужинать.They are all of the 1st type of conjugation. If you are not sure, or have forgotten what it means, we refresh the endings.

Завтракать usage in Russian

Here you are some examples:

Обычно я принимаю душ только вечером.Normally I take a shower only in the evening.
Я не завтракала, потому что у меня болел живот.I didn’t have a breakfast because I had a stomach bug.
Они всегда обедают в кафе напротив офиса.They always have a lunch at the café opposite their office.
Эта семья ужинает в 7 часов вечера. This family has a dinner at 7 p.m.

Now about “смотреть”. Despite having a typical ending of the 1st group, we conjugate it as the 2nd.

Смотреть usage in Russian

For example:

Она по вечерам смотрит свой любимый сериал.Every evening she watches her favourite series.
Неделю назад мы смотрели фильм, который получил несколько наград «Оскар».A week ago, we saw a film that had won a few “Oscars”.

At the first sight, the verb “вставать” looks grammatically nice, but the trick is that we drop out the suffix “ВА” in the present tense only.

Вставать usage in Russian

For example:

По будням я встаю в 6 часов утра.On workdays, I get up at 6 a.m.
В прошлом году я вставал в 9 утра, но в этом году у меня новая работа, и мне приходится вставать в 8.Last year I used to get up at 9 a.m., but this year I have got a new job and I have to get up at 8.

Now the trickiest ones:

Я просыпаюсь в 7.45, но встаю в 8, люблю полежать в кровати и подумать о жизни.I wake up at 7.45 but get up at 8, I love staying in bed a bit and think about life.
Она ложится спать после того, как приготовится к завтрашней работе.She goes to bed after she gets ready for tomorrow’s work.
Каждый день он пишет и отвечает минимум на 20 имейлов.Everyday he writes and answers at least 20 emails.
Я чищу зубы после завтрака.I clean my teeth after breakfast.
